Best Things to do on the Isle of Skye from Glen Sligachan
Glen Sligachan is one of the most spectacular and central spots on the Isle of Skye - and that makes it the perfect base for exploring everything the island has to offer. Whether you're chasing waterfalls, climbing mountains or sipping whisky by the sea, you're never far from an unforgettable adventure.
Here’s our pick of the best things to do on Skye, with travel times and distances from Glen Sligachan.
Visit the Fairy Pools
📍 10 miles / 20-minute drive
These iconic crystal-clear pools sit at the foot of the Black Cuillin mountains and are one of Skye’s most popular sights. There’s an easy trail to walk, and if you’re brave enough - a chance to dip into the chilly water. The access road is single track but suitable for larger vehicles and motorhomes, with a designated car park at the start of the trail. Go early or late in the day to avoid the crowds.
Visit the Old Man of Storr
📍 23 miles / 35-minute drive
A world-famous rock formation perched high above the sea - this one is a must. The walk is steep but relatively short, and the views over to the mainland and Sound of Raasay are unbeatable, especially at sunrise. There is a large payable carpark at the entrance and a small visitor centre where you can pick up some local keep-sakes!
Take a boat trip to Loch Coruisk (from Elgol)
📍 21 miles / 40-minute drive to Elgol harbour
For one of the most dramatic views on Skye, take a boat trip from Elgol to Loch Coruisk - a remote, glacier-carved loch surrounded by the towering Cuillin peaks. Keep an eye out for seals along the way! Two local operators, the Bella Jane and Misty Isle, run regular trips - you can either book a return or take a one way trip if you’re looking to do some further hiking/camping from Loch Coruisk. It’s best to book ahead in summer to avoid disappointment!
Climb the Cuillin Mountains (or just admire them)
📍 Trails from Sligachan itself, or 10–30 minutes away
Glen Sligachan is a hiker’s paradise. From our campsite you can walk directly into the heart of the Cuillin mountains. For seasoned climbers, the Cuillin Ridge offers some of the UK’s most dramatic scrambling and mountaineering. For something gentler, try the path toward the Fairy Pools or walk into the glen for incredible views without a summit.
Explore Portree - the main hub on the Isle of Skye
📍 15 miles / 25-minute drive
Colourful harbourside houses, great cafés, and local independent shops - Portree is a great half-day trip for a wet day or if you just fancy a potter around. It’s also the closest place to stock up on groceries or fuel from Glen Sligachan. There’s also several great walks from Portree including the Scorrybreac trail and it’s also a good place to pick up a fishing permit if you’re angling in the local rivers.
Visit Talisker Distillery
📍 12 miles / 20-minute drive
One of Scotland’s most iconic whisky distilleries, Talisker sits by the sea in Carbost, offering tours and tastings of their smoky single malts. Book ahead, especially in peak season!
Go for a wild swim
📍 Various spots - ask us when you arrive
There are some incredible (and refreshingly cold) swim spots on Skye, but many are off the beaten track. If you’re looking for a dip, come and chat to us at reception - we’ll happily point you in the right direction!
Discover the Old Bridge at Sligachan
📍 Right on your doorstep
Built in the early 1800s, the Old Sligachan Bridge is not just a beautiful photo spot - it’s steeped in legend. According to folklore, if you dip your face in the river beneath the bridge, you’ll be granted eternal beauty…
