Our Top Tips for visiting the Isle Of Skye
At Glen Sligachan, we’ve been welcoming hikers, campers, and curious travellers for decades - and over the years, we’ve picked up a few things. From soggy boots to sunburn (sometimes in the same day), we’ve seen it all. As long-time locals and lovers of Skye, here are our top tips to help you plan ahead, pack right, and make the most of your time in one of the wildest, most beautiful corners of Scotland.
Stock Up On Groceries
While there are Co-op supermarkets in both Broadford and Portree, they can be a little pricier than the mainland. If you’re passing through Inverness (or another city) on your way to Skye, it’s worth stopping at a Lidl or Aldi to stock up and save a few pennies.
Fuel Up Early
Petrol stations on Skye are few and far between. If you're driving, top up in Broadford or Portree so you’re not sweating on the return trip.
Pack For Four Seasons
Skye is renowned for its wild scenery and weather to match. In one afternoon, you might get sunshine, hail, sideways rain and a rainbow. Layers are your friend, and don’t forget waterproofs (yes, even in July). We also have our own live Glen Sligachan weather station so you can plan your day with up-to-date local conditions.
Beware The Midgies!
Bring plenty midgie repellent and maybe even a head net if you're camping or walking near water in summer. You can also pick up midge spray in our campsite shop if you forget.
Book Activities Ahead
Boat trips, restaurants, and cafe’s can fill up fast in peak season. If there's something you really want to do - like a boat to Loch Coruisk or a fancy dinner in Portree - book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Don’t Rely On Your Phone
Mobile signal can be patchy across the island, especially if you’re doing a longer hike like the Skye Trail. Download maps, save bookings, and maybe even go old-school and pack a paper map.
Respect The Island
Please keep dogs on a lead, especially around livestock and wildlife, and always close gates behind you. Fires are welcome as long as they’re raised off the ground and fully contained - wild fires are common on Skye when its hot and dry. Most importantly, leave no trace: take all rubbish with you and respect the land that makes this place so special.
